Further Oral Activity 1

Questions for presentation.

Note that although you will be working in groups you will be graded individually.



  1. How do specific groups express their identity through particular uses of language? Base your answer on your study of the language in cultural context. Marwan and Jenny.
  2. Comment on the advantages and disadvantages of being bilingual with reference to your own experience and to that of others. Mariam and Sara
  3. What are some of the ways in which a language changes over time? Do you think such changes are positive or negative? Farida T, and Hussein
  4. “Language is the most vivid and crucial key to identity.” Discuss this statement with reference to your study of this option. Zeina and Malak
  5. How does Language reinforce stereotypes? Is there really gender neutral language?Farida K and Alia S.

View the following video for guidelines for a sample of what the expectations are for your introduction. The students address all the four points below.


  1. You must indicate which learning outcome you are addressing.
  2. You must have a primary text on which your discussion is based.
  3. A discussion of devices and their effects is compulsory.
  4. Remember to use a register appropriate for your presentation.
Criteria 

Criterion A – Knowledge and understanding of the text(s) and subject matter or extract – 10 marks
The student shows an excellent knowledge of the text(s) or topics. The student understands how the meaning of the text(s) relates to the subject matter.
Criterion B – Understanding of how language is used – 10 marks
The student shows how language is used to create an effect on an audience. There is an understanding and appreciation of how language creates meaning.
Criterion C – Organization – 5 marks
The further oral activity is effectively and coherently structured. There is strong evidence of organization.
Criterion D – Language – 5 marks
The language used by each student is varied, appropriate and accurate. While the nature of each activity may differ, all activities require a certain register from participants.
